Dr. Winkelmann lives in Cary with his son, who he adores, and one white cat named Buster. He has been and continues to be active in the Boy Scouts of America. He served as a Bear and Webelows Den Leader in Pack 393 and is now an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 216. Prior to Boy Scouts, Dr. Winkelmann volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol and served as an instructor pilot and chief check pilot. He is also the founder of the Bandit Flight Team, which can be seen at North Carolina State University (NCSU) football game openings. His hobbies and interests include muscle cars from the 60s and 70s, aviation, and the outdoors.
